About our Riders of the Month, Harriet and Fergus!

I joined the pony club with my pony "Stevie" in February 2011.   My brother joined with his pony "Frosty" in April - though we do swap ponies too! We hadn't ridden at all before we got our ponies so its been heaps of fun and a bit scarey at the same time. I've been to some of the club rallies which I really, reallly enjoy. Its fun riding with others and learning more about ponies and how to care for them. I'm doing some riding off the lead rein and I can't wait until I can do it all by myself. My brother is mostly on the lead rein, so Mum has to run around beside the pony as he likes to do lots of trotting. I'm getting good at brushing, cleaning out hooves and 'tacking up' - that's putting the saddle and bridle on, but I still need a bit of help getting the girth tight enough. We love going riding and we usually go 3 or 4 times a week.

About Mangere Pony Club

Mangere Pony Club riding members generally have their own horse or pony. We also have a ‘Riders Without Horses Programme’ for members who do not have their own horse or pony where they can learn about everything involved in caring for a horse without having to make the commitment of buying one. See ‘News and Events’ for more information on this programme. Overall, Mangere Pony Club is a fun and supportive environment for children who want to own their own horse or pony. We also have a few adult members who are always willing to help the younger ones.

Mangere Pony Clubs facilitates and encourage the development of riding and horse management skills and achievement of NZPCA certificates by our members. Our members ride in weekly ‘rallies’ during the summer season and we have a mix of riders at all different certificate levels. At each rally members are split up into groups and coached in riding and horse management skills by qualified instructors. There are also inter-pony club team competitions each season which Mangere members are encouraged to enter. At these they get the chance to compete against teams from other pony clubs in the Auckland and Manukau districts and these are always a lot of fun.

Mangere Pony Club has excellent facilities to help our members develop and grow in their riding (see ‘Facilities’) including two arenas and a full cross country course. Mangere Pony Club provides on-site grazing for our members but not all members graze on site. Non-members can also use our grounds for $20 per combination.

All members must abide by the NZPCA ‘Fair Play Charter’ (see below) at all times.
